March 20, 2011

After a 3 day hiatus of calls, Yorktown Fire was dispatched to assist EMS in the rescue of a man 25 feet up in a tree having a heart attack. Engine 270 and Rescue 16, along with 2533 and 2531 signed on responding seconds after dispatch.

After a 20 min hike through the woods, units gained patient contact and found a single male victim, approximately 20 feet in the air complaining of chest pains. Units removed the victim from the tree, packaged and removed him from the woods, then handed off to awaiting EMS units. Yorktown units went in service at approximately 1830 hours.

At 1903, while firefighters were still recovering from their trek through the woods at the firehouse, Yorktown PD was overheard dispatching cars to a working fire on Mead St. Car 2531, Engine 273 and Ladder 51 were on the road as the first set of tones dropped and were responding with full crews. Car 2531 arrived on location to find a 2 story house with smoke showing, and neighbors stating that the homeowner was still inside. Engine 273 arrived as the 10-75 was transmitted, bringing in Bedford hills on the FAST assignment and Mohegan and Somers on the relocate. Engine 273's crew made initial entry into the building, and was met with extremely high fire load in the home and high heat and fire on the 2nd floor. Peekskill FAST was special called because of the cluttered condition, with trash packed from floor to the ceiling.

3 Firefighters from 273 stretched 2 hand lines, and made entry through the front door as primary searches were underway. Engine 273's Officer and a firefighter made their way up the stairs, and found a victim, who was then removed from the house. Resuscitation efforts were attempted by the firefighters with no success. The crew then stretched a line to the 2nd floor and began to extinguish of the fire.

Ladder 51's crew preformed the necessary functions of venting the roof, placing ground ladders, performing primary and secondary searches, and overhauling the fire. Rescue 16 and Engine 271 assisted both the truck and 1st due engine in operations.

During this time, Engine 270 and Car 2532 took in a Automatic alarm on Broad St, followed by another possible structure fire on Hitching Post Ln, with Somers Engine 188 and Mohegan ladder 10.
