October 30, 2011

Starting just after noon on 10/29/2011, snow began to fall and would transpire later into what would be a record breaking weekend in October for not only the weather, but for Yorktown Fire as well. Yorktown fire started staffing the station at noon with multiple crews, and took their first run in at 1403hrs. Crews would be responding to consistent calls for the next 40 hours and take in enough runs to not only match our yearly call record of 614, but blow by it by over 40 runs with 2 full months still left in the year.

While crews were operating on 10/29, Croton was dispatched to a working basement fire on South Riverside Ave in a commercial structure with apartments on the 2nd floor. Engine 272 was sent on the relocate on the first alarm, only to be sent right to work upon arrival in Croton when the IC transmitted the 2nd alarm. The engine crew relieved the Croton units operating and took over fire suppression in the basement, then moved to the first floor to locate fire behind the walls and in pipe chases as well.

Yorktown's FASTeam also took in a run with Mohegan Fire on Arch drive on 10/30. Mohegan units arrived to find a 3 story wood frame, residential building with fire showing from the attic. Rescue 16 responded for the first time as the newly designated FAST truck, and units stood by until the fire was placed under control.

As of 10am on 10/31, Yorktown Fire's Volunteers responded to 51 calls for service in 44 hours, with plenty more work to be done as power and service lines are repaired and turned back on.

Units: Yorktown Fire - All

Mutual Aid: Croton fire, Mohegan Fire
