On Sunday, January 31, 2010, the Yorktown Heights Engine Company mourned the loss of Past Chief, Engine Company Life Member, current President of the Engine Company Benevolent Association, and current Fire Marshal of the Town of Yorktown Seymour Samuels. Seymour joined the fire company in 1949, and has remained an active member for the past 61 years, serving on numerous fundraising and event committees. In 1964 and 1965 he served as Fire Chief, during which time he had command of one of the largest fire incidents in the history of the Engine Company, the Locke Ledge Mansion fire of 1966. Also during this time the Engine Company constructed and opened Fire Station No. 2 on Locksley Road. Past Chief Samuels then utilized his training and experience and moved into a position as the towns Fire Marshal, where he has served for over 30 years. The fact that a fire fatality has never occurred in a commercial establishment in the Town of Yorktown can be directly attributed to Past Chief Samuels' dedicated work in that capacity.
Seymour will be missed, and his dedication and hard work as a member of the Engine Company will serve has a model for many others for years to come.
