Yorktown Heights Engine Company closes out National Fire Prevention Week with the Annual Open House and Demo’s

By Fire Chief Martin McGannon
October 12, 2008

On Sunday October 12 YHEC opened it doors to educate the public on fire safety. There was literature handed out and equipment on display for those who attended to have a better understanding of the fire service. This year we were joined by Brian Lazzaro a Boy Scout from Troup 165. Brian presented poster boards on fire hydrant care and fire safety to the public, as part of his Eagle Scout project. Brian's main project was to install hydrant makers and GPS all the hydrants in the fire district, congratulations Brian.
After lunch, using the roof simulator firefighter Derek Grisanti and Tim Collins demoed roof ventilation techniques. To close out the afternoon of demo's using Hurst Tools from Eng. 270 members performed vehicle extrication.
Fire prevention is NOT only for a week. It is a 24-7-365 a day job and it is every one's job to practice. According to USFA (U.S. Fire Administration) there were 530,500 structure fires for the year 2007. That is about a fire every minute in the United States.
Members of Yorktown Fire Prevention Committee continue educating the public with visit to school and tours at the fire house. If any schools in the Fire District wish to contact us, please e-mail us at info@yorktownfire.org.
