Yorktown firefighters broke out their hammers, bags-o-nails, and interior design skills over the weekend to design and build a brand new mask confidence simulator inside of the roof ventilation simulator located behind the 1916 Commerce St Firehouse. Saturday was spent demoing the old simulator, ensuring that the wood, and materials were preserved for re-use. The old simulator was primarily focused on using reduced and low profile techniques with a firefighter's air bottle, to maneuver around tight and simulated collapsed spaces. Sunday was spent constructing a brand new, 2 level course, that will be a challenge for all. The course encompasses all areas of a mask confidence simulator including two areas of entanglement hazards, low profile maneuvering, reduced profile maneuvering, moving up and down a set of stairs, simulated attic maneuvering over joists, and will eventually feature a collapse simulator. We would like to thank the members who gave up their weekend from their families to construct a training device that will assist firefighters in the event they become trapped in an actual fire. |
