On April 25, 2011, Yorktown Fire was alerted to the Taconic State Parkway, Northbound, just north of Rt 134 for an MVA with extrication. Car 2531, 2532, 2533, Engine 270, Rescue 16 and Engine 273, all with full crews signed on responding. While enroute, units were updated that the only caller was the driver of the car involved in the accident, and no one saw him crash; he wasn't sure if he was in the median or off into the wooded shoulder as well. As Yorktown units approached the scene, they updated that the caller could see the red lights from the emergency vehicles. Car 2533 was flagged down by a NYSP Trooper, who by chance happened to see broken brush leading down the embankment on the median side. The only thing visible from the shoulder of the road was his arm waving to grab our attention. Yorktown units quickly determined that the driver was heavily pinned inside of the vehicle, and immediately went to work to free the trapped occupant. The car was a newer type model with an extremely strong frame. It was also quickly determined that cutting through the metal, was going to taken an extended period of time due to its strength. A precautionary handline was stretched and multiple hydraulic cutters and spreaders, 3 hydraulic rams, 1 sawsall, and 1 steering wheel cutter were all put to use at the same time. Units removed the roof, drivers door, and preformed a dash roll to free the occupants trapped leg. It was then determined that the victim's right leg was pinned behind the brake and the clutch. After determining the best course of action to remove the clutch, the steering wheel cutter was used to remove the brake pedal. The victim was then freed after 55 minutes of extrication time, and handed over to EMS and transported ALS to Westchester Medical Center. Amazingly the victim was alert and conscious for the duration of the incident and sustained only minor injuries. |
