| On May 9, 2012 Yorktown Heights Engine Company mourned the loss of life member, Past Fire Police Captain, and Secretary/Treasurer of the Yorktown Heights Fire District and former Yorktown councilman Douglas Malcolm Owens Sr.
Douglas moved to Yorktown in 1955 and after a few years in business he joined the ranks of the Yorktown Heights Engine Company Fire Police Unit. He worked his way up to the rank of Fire Police Captain and he was responsible for securing many scenes directed by the Fire Chief. Proving his ability to lead and along with his experience as an accountant he was appointed as Secretary/Treasurer of the Yorktown Heights Fire District until he retired.
After spending time with his family and business and the fire company, Douglas found the time to become involved in many community organizations, such as the Yorktown Lions, Rotary, Elks and the Chamber of Commerce, earning the name Mr. Yorktown by many of his friends. It is for this reason he was recruited to the Town of Yorktown Board In 1968 to finish out a vacant seat. Doing a good job for the residents of Yorktown he was elected back in to office in 1969 and served until 1973.
Douglas M. Owens Sr. will be missed for his smile and his humor although sometimes dry and sarcastic. Most of all he will be missed for his unwavering friendship he showed to everyone.
