HazMat Incident at Turcos Supermarket |
January 25, 2017 | |
At approximately 12:40 the Yorktown Fire Department was dispatched to Turcos Supermarket for a commercial fire alarm. Upon arrival of Yorktown Car 2533, it was determined that there was a significant freon leak inside of the building and that the vapor cloud resulting from the leak had set off the fire alarm. Assets were requested from the Montrose Va Fire Department HazMat team. Unfortunately the request was unable to be fulfilled due to the specific meter that was needed being out of service, however the VA provided technical support during the operation. Requests were then placed to HazMat resources of IBM TJ Watson Research Center in Yorktown and the Hartsdale Fire Department with their specialized air metering/monitoring devices. Crews arrived on location, and a joint FASTeam consisting of HFD and YHFD members was established, while an initial entry team consisting of HFD / YHFD / IBM members made entry to determine readings and the extent of the spill. With the product continuing to off gas, a second entry team was made with absorbent and chemical pads to mitigate the leak. All products were placed and sealed into overpack drums. Notifications to the Westchester County Department of Health, and the NYS Agriculture and Markets office were made as well, and the scene was turned over to the building management, the Yorktown Fire Marshal, and the NYS Agriculture and Markets office. All Fire and IBM units cleared the scene without further incident. |
