At 9:24 pm on June 28th, Yorktown Fire was dispatched to an Automatic Alarm at Yorktown High School. Car 2531, Car 2533, Engine 273, Ladder 51 and Rescue 16 all signed on responding immediately after dispatch with full crews. Upon arrival crews used the knox box key to gain entry, and through a building sweep found heavy smoke on the second floor. Crews were able to determine that the smoke was coming from an elevator shaft, and with the assistance of the custodian who arrived on scene, gained access to the elevator mechanical room on the outside of the building. A small electrical fire was found inside the room and beginning to extend into the elevator shaft itself and a dry chemical extinguisher was used to knock down the main body of fire. Crews then vented the smoke from the building, and all units cleared without further incident at 10:30.
