On wednesday, July 12th, in the rear of Yorktown's Headquarters, the Junior Corp took part in a drill involving ground ladders. The group worked hard as a team to carry two ladders for an extended period of time over a fair distance. They then proceeded to throw and extend a 35 ft. ladder against the back of the firehouse. Certain techniques were discussed and shown to newer JC members, such as the "leg lock," which is when the firefighter uses his leg and the rungs of the ladder to anchor himself, allowing easier mobility and the use of both hands, weither it be for venting a structure, or hoisting tools up the ladder.
After ground ladders, the Airial piece of Ladder 51 was extended 100 ft, where the JC members proceeded to climb to the end of the ladder. Following that, the ladder was raised to an 80 degree angle, where the courage of many JC members was ultimately put to the test.
